Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels have been installed on the first of many homes in the Brecon Beacons region of Wales after a village won a contest to cut its energy consumption through sustainable construction solutions.
Llangattock''s residents won the Welsh final of the British Gas Green Streets challenge last November, which set out to find the UK''s most eco-friendly community, the BBC reported.
It is hoped that the £140,000 prize will allow up to 50 homes in the region to benefit from sustainable construction products, such as PV solar panels for the generation of renewable energy.
Lee Barlow, Green Streets project manager, said: ''[Some villagers] are opting for better insulation, or to replace old, inefficient boilers, which are two of the key things that can really help you save energy.''
Earlier this week, the Bristol Evening Post claimed that, under the government''s new Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme, the potential rewards of solar PV systems now outweigh the cost of having panels installed.
