A newly opened primary school in Wales has become the only school in the whole of the UK to receive an A+ rating for its energy efficiency, as it uses a number of methods, including solar PV panels, to save money and protect the environment.

Greenhill Primary School, which was built at a cost of £3.95 million, part of which was a grant from the Welsh assembly, makes use of solar panels, wind turbines and the recycling of rainwater in order to drive down its running costs considerably.

Gaynor Anstice, headteacher of Greenhill Primary, told Wales Online: "It's been like a dream. We've got every resource you would want at a school, and we are just so lucky."

She said that the installations gave a chance for them to not only save money, but also to educate pupils on the benefits of energy efficiency.

School pupils in Gloucestershire have also recently gone green, setting up an eco-group at Winchcombe High and handing out referral notices to teachers caught wasting energy.
