The number of households that are in fuel debt could soon rise due to increasing electricity and gas bills, an expert has warned.
Ron Campbell, head of campaigns, policy, information and research at National Energy Action, has highlighted the problems facing these homes in cold weather, which could see energy efficiency measures such as eco construction products being installed.
He highlighted the importance of households ensuring they do not turn down their heating, instead opting to contact their suppliers to discuss their situation.
Mr Campbell added: ''Help is available to make energy costs more affordable through energy efficiency improvements and through social tariffs offered by energy suppliers.''
At present, five million households in the UK are in fuel poverty and this will get worse, he warned.
Recent research by uSwitch found that there has been a 16 per cent rise in energy debt in the last two years, with more than one in five households in debt to their suppliers.
