Sustainable construction products have played a key part in two North Tyneside schools being recognised for their eco-friendly credentials.
Norham Community College in North Shields and Amberley Primary School in Killingworth have both been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag for their use of eco construction products, according to the News Guardian.
Keith Page, lead teacher for environment at Norham, told the paper that earning the award had been a real challenge and required everyone at the school to be onboard.
He said: ''It reflects the hard work of the students and staff and recognises the sustainability ethos that we have established at our school for the future benefit of our students and wider community.
Amberley Primary now has its own wind turbine and a bank of photovoltaic solar panels, as well as plans for developing a rainwater harvesting system.
This comes after a primary school in the south of England unveiled its new solar PV equipment at the weekend.
St Mary''s Primary in Finchley could soon be saving up to £400 each year in energy costs thanks to its adoption of sustainable construction products.
