Local councils ''should be set renewable energy targets''

Local councils should be given targets when it comes to developing renewable energy schemes, it has been suggested.

A new coalition has been founded by Friends of the Earth (FoE) and the Town and Country Planning Association to look at how England''s planning system can respond to climate change issues more effectively.

It is calling on ministers to make a number of amends to the existing system, encouraging local authorities to meet targets for renewable energy development.

Andy Atkins, executive director of FoE, believes it is important green developments are given more support.

He added: ''Local councils have a major role to play in ensuring UK emissions reductions are met - the government must ensure that local councils get serious about CO2.''

Earlier this month, FoE also suggested the UK should improve its focus on recycling to further boost its environmental credentials and become a world leader in the field of waste reduction.
