A number of sustainable construction measures are to be incorporated into a new accommodation development planned for the University of Liverpool.

It has been confirmed that the Eco Residences site will benefit from the introduction of things like a system for rainwater harvesting and green roofing.

Meanwhile, the Chatham Street project, which is expected to cost £45 million, will also boast low energy lighting systems.

Facilities management director at the university Steve Dickson has noted that the building will also give students the chance to enjoy new catering services.

''It''s important for the university to be able to offer the kind of world-class accommodation that will attract the best students to Liverpool,'' he commented.

In total, 710 bedrooms are being proposed for the site, which has now received planning approval.

Sustainability has also been at the heart of the Green Streets scheme backed by British Gas, which is helping a number of areas of the country to become more eco-friendly.
