Plans to develop a major offshore wind power site near Skegness are set to go ahead after gaining final investment approval.

Centrica has announced that the Lincs renewable energy project will boast a total of 75 3.6MW wind turbines.

It is hoped that construction work on the scheme will start next year, with £725 million being invested.

Centrica''s chief executive Sam Laidlaw believes that the firm remains committed to renewable energy developments.

He said: ''The government''s enhanced financial framework for offshore wind has been fundamental in improving the overall project economics of this development.''

The company now claims that the Lincs turbines, which will be based 8km from Skegness, should be capable of producing energy by the end of 2012.

Earlier this month, ministers launched a new research project to look at how wind farm planning problems caused by radar interference might be overcome more effectively in the future.
