Renewable energy projects that rely on hydro power should be introduced in a careful manner so that they do not cause any harm to local environments, it has been suggested.
According to a spokesperson from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), there are a number of benefits that such schemes can have.
Nevertheless, she went on to say: ''They can, however, have a significant impact on the water environment if not managed properly, which is why we urge anyone who is interested to contact us for advice and guidance.''
The spokesperson also noted that SEPA may reassess the licenses of any hydro power schemes that it has previously granted permission for, if negative ecological changes are being seen as a result of their development.
Earlier in the month, the Scottish government''s energy minister Jim Mather noted the positive role that hydro power projects could have within the country.
