Ministers should ensure that their plans for domestic renewable energy generation stretch far enough, according to one expert.

Leonie Green, the head of external affairs at the Renewable Energy Association, believes that forthcoming government feed-in tariff plans need to be extensive.

She commented: ''The new renewable electricity payment schemes that will be announced shortly should make it easier for everyone to invest - let''s hope the government delivers the ambitious scheme we clearly all want.''

The remarks made by Ms Green follow the publication of research by her organisation, in collaboration with the environmental group Friends of the Earth and the Co-operative Group.

A poll of UK consumers found that as many as 64 per cent of respondents do not feel that the present feed-in tariff proposals have a large enough scope.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the issue of renewable energy, the hydro power potential that Scotland offers has recently been suggested by the country''s energy minister Jim Mather.
