Two of the country''s main political parties are keen to extend the existing feed-in tariff scheme which currently encourages the take-up of renewable energy products like PV solar panels, an environmental group suggests.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) has highlighted the responses it has received from both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party regarding their plans to enhance the scheme, which was originally introduced by the Labour government earlier this year.

While the Liberal Democrats believe that people who opt for micro-generation devices in their homes should receive a sum of £400, FoE has noted that the Tories would like to make ten-megawatt projects eligible for the scheme.

The importance of dealing with climate change problems has been highlighted by Andy Atkins, executive director at FoE.

He stated: ''Households, businesses, communities and local councils must all be encouraged to play their part in tackling climate change.''

The three main political parties are currently on the campaign trail, ahead of the general election which this year falls on May 6th.
